Mojave Desert - Hot, Hot, Hot!

We are currently in a Motel 6 in Needles, CA. Motel 6 and Needles seem to go together. Funky motel, funky town. Needles is on old Route 66, but most of the icons seem to be gone. This is the hottest place in the US, from what we've heard. Yesterday it was 122 degrees, today 112. Thank goodness we have air conditioning in our room! We spent the day in Joshua Tree National Park, then drove east and north through the Mojave Desert to Needles. Tomorrow we will leave California, enter Arizona and head to the Grand Canyon.

Key's View, Joshua Tree National Park

Can you see the San Andreas Fault in the background? How about Palm Springs?

Joshua Tree National Park

Rocks that look like giant bear turds and yucca that look like trees! Really though, a pretty amazing place.

A necessary watering hole after a hot and dry visit to the Park.

This is California Route 62 Eastbound. It connects to Route 95 Northbound into Needles. About 110 miles through the Mojave Desert. All desert, no services. Air conditioning and iTunes in the car.

I love following your travels and I love your pictures. You guys look so happy. Wish we could get a piece of that heat in Seattle!

I remember driving through Joshua Tree. I thought the diversity of the cacti was so interesting. I never thought I would find a arind landscape so beautiful, but this park, as are the others, truly is.
